The ecommerce app gaps: 9 tools sellers keep searching for — and not finding (2026)
Nine ecommerce gaps where the seller literally types 'looking for an app that…' and the thread ends without an answer — pooled inventory, split POs, bundle-and-upsell, photo-to-resale. Each a public request, scored for how empty the field is.
TL;DR — Online sellers don't open Reddit and the Shopify forums to chat. They go there to find an app — and a striking number leave without one. We pulled nine ecommerce gaps from the GapMine library where the merchant literally types "looking for an app that…" and the thread ends without a clean answer. Each one below is a real, public request, scored for how empty the field is. If you build Shopify or marketplace tools, this is a search-log of unmet demand.
How this list was built
GapMine clusters public builder and seller chatter into scored opportunity cards. For this list we filtered the library to ecommerce, then kept only cards where the demand is phrased as a direct app search — "is there an app for…", "looking for a tool that…" — and where the opportunity score says the field still has no dominant answer.
- Library snapshot: June 10, 2026 · ecommerce cards only
- Scoring: opportunity score 0–100 = pain × pay-intent × blue-ocean weighting (fewer existing competitors → higher score), graded at temperature 0
- Rule: every entry quotes the seller verbatim and links to the public thread
The nine searches
*1 · Sync inventory across channels and reconcile the payouts — score 85 The single highest-scoring ecommerce gap. A seller's exact words: "Looking for a software that both syncs multichannel inventory and records payouts." Plenty of apps sync stock. The unmet half is the money — matching payouts back to the inventory that moved. (r/ecommerce)
2 · A monitor that tells you the payment webhook died — score 84 "Stripe webhooks were silently failing on a client store for weeks and WooCommerce never flagged it." Orders quietly stop and the dashboard says nothing. The ask is an uptime monitor for money flow — alert on the silence, not just the error. (r/woocommerce)
3 · A shared inventory cap across product variants — score 84 "How to set a total inventory limit (e.g. 900kg) shared across all product variants." Shopify tracks stock per-variant; sellers who sell one material in many sizes want one pooled number. Also surfaced as "looking for an app to control limited inventory sales." (Shopify community)
4 · Bundles, add-ons and upsells in one app — score (Disruption, 8 demand signals) The busiest card in the set — eight separate sellers asking variations of the same thing: "Looking for an app… create bundles as a product," "What is the best app for upselling and cross-selling?", "How to include add ons to specific products?" Lots of single-purpose apps, no one tool that does the bundle-plus-upsell job cleanly. (Shopify community)
5 · A purchase-order system that splits a delivery by store — score 77 "Looking for a PO system that can receive stock and split it by store in one workflow." The seller receives a pallet of mixed SKUs and wants the tool to tell them exactly how many of each go to each location — before they box them. (r/shopify)
6 · Custom-product orders with buyer-supplied materials — score 83 "I'm looking for advice on how to better track customer-supplied materials for custom orders." B2B and made-to-order sellers need order types that handle "customer's own material" and post-purchase edits — Shopify's native order object doesn't model it. (Shopify community)
7 · See how long staff actually worked — inside Shopify — score 83 "Is there an app… where I can see how long my staff worked? I.e. timestamps, check in and check out time." Small retailers running Shopify POS want time-tracking that lives where the sales already are, not a separate HR tool. (r/shopify)
8 · Photo-to-resale-value for resellers — score 77 "If an app could identify an item from a photo and show realistic resale value instantly would you pay for it?" — the seller answering their own pricing question. Compare across eBay, Amazon, Vinted and compute the margin before buying. The pay-intent is in the quote. (r/AmazonFBA)
9 · One tool from idea to running store — score (6 demand signals) "Tool for going from idea to full online business (name, site, marketing)?" (↑9) and "Looking for automation advice for e-commerce." New sellers want the whole 0-to-1 path stitched together, not six disconnected tools they have to learn first. (r/smallbusiness)
What the list says
The Shopify App Store lists thousands of apps. These nine searches still end without a clean answer — which tells you exactly where the long tail breaks.
Every gap here sits in the same place: the seam between what the platform models and how a real store runs. Shopify's data model thinks in per-variant stock, single-owner orders, and standalone products. Real sellers think in pooled materials, split deliveries, customer-supplied inputs, and money that has to be reconciled across three channels. The apps that win the next cycle won't add a feature — they'll model the seam.
And notice what these sellers are not asking for. Nobody here wants AI. They want a boring tool that does one operational job the platform left to a spreadsheet. That's the signature of a real market: the buyer describes the job, not the technology — and they're already paying for a worse version of it.
If you build for ecommerce, this page is a to-do list written by the people who'd pay for the tool. Start with the loudest one — the bundles-and-upsell card alone logged eight separate sellers asking the same thing — and read the thread.
