What People Were Asking For on Reddit: August 2026

We track what people ask for in public, cluster the repeats, and check what's shipping against each ask. This is the August 2026 snapshot: what surfaced on Reddit in the 30 days before August 28, counted by distinct people asking. We refreshed the counts on September 16 so every number matches the page it links to.

One theme dominated the month. People are trying to leave big-tech ecosystems, and the exits still don't fit what they're asking for.

The de-Google month

Four separate clusters, one story:

A Gmail alternative that comes with the rest of the office. 6 people, 11 rivals detected. The nuance in the posts: they don't just want email. "I don't need Google Docs, but need something to substitute it." Leaving Gmail means leaving Docs, Calendar and Drive at the same time, and the alternatives handle one piece each. Evidence

Maps without the harvesting. 6 people, 11 rivals detected. Verbatim: "I don't need a map app that harvests my data." The open-source options exist. The complaints say they're not good enough for daily driving yet. Evidence

Photos after the 15GB wall. 4 people, 10 rivals detected. "The 15GB limit feels..." you can finish that sentence yourself. Self-hosted photo tools are the most mature corner of this cluster, and people still bounce off the setup. Evidence

Email storage that's actually private. 4 people, 18 rivals detected. Plenty of options, unresolved anxiety: "I don't want anything from private documents to my personal thoughts" sitting on someone else's server. Eighteen tools detected and the asking continues — the scan found nine more since August, and not one of them ended the thread. Evidence

The hardware behind the exit

A home server you can't hear. 9 people, 13 rivals detected. The month's loudest single ask. People building their first self-hosted setup want small, quiet and under-provisioned on purpose: "I don't need a large amount of storage yet, and 4TB will be enough." The market keeps selling them rack gear. Evidence

Home automation with a reason. 6 people, 19 rivals detected. Our favorite post of the month came from an earthquake-prone region: automation as safety infrastructure, not mood lighting. Evidence

When a product dies, demand goes looking

TV Time announced changes and a decade of user data got nervous. 4 people in the first days, 7 rivals detected. "I've been a TV Time user for a decade and they just announced..." Product shutdowns are the most reliable demand trigger we track. The users exist, trained and ready. They just need somewhere to go. Evidence

How to read a monthly snapshot

These are young signals, so the counts are small: 4 to 9 distinct people each. That is what demand looks like at birth. The clusters that matter will keep growing, and we'll re-count next month. "Rivals detected" is what our scan found shipping; a tool with no web presence won't show up, so treat low counts as "we found few," not "none exist."
