The Ask Names the Platform: Seven Gaps That Want a Plugin, Not a Product
Seven gaps in GapMine, carrying 53 distinct people asking, are not product asks at all. Each one names the platform it should live inside, from a multi-vault Obsidian plugin to a delivery date in a Shopify basket.
We read every GapMine gap with four or more distinct people asking, looking for one shape: an ask that names the tool it should live inside. Seven of them do, and together they carry 53 distinct people asking. None is asking for a new app. Each wants a hole filled inside software the person already installed or already pays for — a plugin, a sync, a missing field in a checkout. As of 2026-10-31, GapMine tracks 1,200 open gaps, and only 161 have four or more distinct people asking, so these seven sit in the thin top slice of the pool.
| Gap | People asking | Rivals shipping | What they said |
|---|---|---|---|
| Obsidian plugin development | 20 people | 24 rivals shipping | "I wish there was a multi-vault plugin" |
| Obsidian second brain | 6 people | 19 rivals shipping | "making my own Wikipedia from scratch" |
| WordPress plugin builder | 6 people | 11 rivals shipping | "a WordPress plugin for a “sell your item” form" |
| WooCommerce shipping software | 6 people | 24 rivals shipping | "inventory counts are done by hand" |
| Webflow CMS alternative | 5 people | 19 rivals shipping | "600 lines of messy JS that I don’t fully understand" |
| Shopify order tracking | 5 people | 21 rivals shipping | "clear in the basket too, before they pay" |
| Automated invoice email tool | 5 people | 29 rivals shipping | "it was getting paid" |
A second Obsidian card sits beside it. Obsidian second brain has 6 people and 19 rivals shipping, and the complaint is about payoff: "my mind keeps telling me I'm just making my own Wikipedia from scratch which is not time-efficient." That is a gap for something that does the linking work, inside a tool the person already committed to.
WordPress plugin builder has 6 people and 11 rivals shipping, the lowest rival count in this group. One person wants "a WordPress plugin for a “sell your item” form with automatic price estimation." Specific, boring, attached to an install base.
WooCommerce shipping software has 6 people and 24 rivals shipping. The line we kept: "I don't use any barcodes or scanners or anything, and so all inventory pulls and inventory counts are done by hand." The store runs. The glue around it does not.
Webflow CMS alternative has 5 people and 19 rivals shipping. One of them is "staring at about 600 lines of messy JS that I don’t fully understand" to get CMS behaviour Webflow will not do natively. They already paid for the platform and are now writing code to escape it.
Shopify order tracking has 5 people and 21 rivals shipping. The ask is one placement: "I can put the delivery time on the product page, but Id like it to be clear in the basket too, before they pay." A field in a cart, not a tracking product.
Automated invoice email tool has 5 people and 29 rivals shipping, the most crowded card here. It still got asked for, by someone running an agency: "our biggest bottleneck wasn't writing code … it was getting paid."
The pattern
Every card here showed at least 11 rivals in our scan, and most showed more than 19. Read rival counts as a verdict and all seven look closed. But these asks are not category-sized. They are one setting, one field, one sync. The rivals we counted are mostly standalone products chasing the whole job, while the person asking wants the last stretch of a job they already started inside a host platform. That gap is the opening, and distribution comes attached: a plugin directory, an app store, a marketplace. It also caps the upside, because the host owns the customer. We looked at the same narrowness from another direction in Less Software, Please, and at what breaks after a platform build works in After the Build.
Honest limits
Author counts are distinct people publicly asking in the threads we scanned, not market size. Five people is a reason to go look, not a business case. Our rival scan has a recall ceiling: a rival count of 24 means we matched 24, not that 24 is the true total. Several of these cards date from April to August 2026, so a platform may have shipped the feature natively since the thread was posted. Check the host changelog before you build. The quotes are single voices lifted from a card; they show the ask, they do not average it. And as of 2026-10-31, 886 of the 1,200 gaps in the pool fall in our most crowded rivals bucket, the one for 10 and up, so a high rival count is the normal condition here, not a special warning about these seven.
